MONTREAL, CITY OF FASHION

02/05/2011

Shopping addicts and followers of all things chic: Welcome to Montreal, a city that combines creativity and talent at all times… and always in its own unique fashion.  In an age when tastes are becoming more uniform, Montreal dares to go off the beaten path, developing its own cutting-edge style and personality.  Without further ado, then, let’s go on a guided tour of the boutiques— and behind-the-scenes activity— that define Montreal fashion.

QUEBEC’S BIG NAMES

French for Fashion 101: What’s known in France as “le shopping” is called “le magasinage” in Quebecois French. Everything else is easy— fashion is everywhere. You’ll find it in former textile factories converted into creative studios.  In shopping streets filled with signs for Montreal labels like Rudsak, M0851 and Parasuco. In the workshops of renowned designers like Marie Saint Pierre, Michel Desjardins and Philippe Dubuc.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER IN MONTRÉAL

In a reflection of the city’s culture of fashion, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is once again devoting an exhibition to one of the great fashion designers. After Yves Saint Laurent and Montreal’s own Denis Gagnon, now it’s Jean-Paul Gaultier, the enfant terrible of French fashion, who will be on display at Sherbrooke Street from June 17th to October 2nd.

ON THE CATWALK

Journalists and professionals come together twice a year at Montreal Fashion Week to discover the collections of our star designers and up-and-coming creators, whereas the general public is invited to the Fashion and Design Festival. This ultra-trendy event takes place this year from August 3-6 on McGill College Avenue, right in the middle of downtown. An absolute must for all you trendspotters.
